A Product Manager’s Leadership in the Middle of a Launch and Its Delays

As a product manager, I have been in the situation where development runs into unexpected issues, needs more time, and the launch slips as a result.

A launch becomes a pause.

Those delays create real pressure from senior management, who are worried about deadlines and about staying competitive. In that moment it becomes the product manager’s responsibility to communicate the reasons for the delay to stakeholders, and to work with the development team on a solution that meets the requirements while minimising the impact on the timeline.

That usually means negotiating priorities with the development team, seeking additional resources or budget, and setting realistic expectations with stakeholders. It is uncomfortable, and it is also where the job is most visible.

While these situations are stressful, they are also opportunities for growth and for sharpening your judgment. By managing the pressure well, a product manager demonstrates leadership, communication, and problem solving, and still delivers a successful launch. The pause becomes a finish line rather than a failure.

If this is the kind of thinking you want more of, the newsletter goes out once a week: one field note, and nothing else.
